Times for the first three dirt races today at Belmont have been very fast -- 6 furlongs in 1:08.8; 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.70 and a mile in 1:34.88. Maybe in the Belmont I'll take the lead, improve my position and dazzle the figure guys.

You figure that's a good idea? Rather than fighting your horse to get outside before the turn, bumping and getting bumped, being checked when there was absolutely no reason to be put in that position, all the while losing precious energy on a sweltering day? You mean when the rail is open and that's where the horse wants to go and history has shown he can go wire to wire on the lead on the rail? Absolutely. The horse race was lost before the first turn due to a jock who made the worst of what could have been a great situation. Get the lead unimpeded, settle, build confidence, and cruise home. Instead he had an unhappy horse all the way around.
